OUR CHILDREN
SIlvestar has been the oldest Kolbas in the family for some time. His parents died, his father before the war, and his mother a little later. His younger brother also died from the consequences of the war. He is 68 years old and married for the second time. He has three children: Jakov, the eldest from his first marriage; Eva, from his second marriage, born from in vitro fertilization; and Ante, who was adopted from a children’s home when he was eight. The director deals with children’s influence on his feelings, attitudes, and the relationship between himself and his wife. Also, he deals with his influence on his children, his relationship with them, and the anxiety of whether he gives them all the same amount of love. Finally, he wonders how the children change him and how he sees the relationship between them as spouses, and themselves.
Silvestar Kolbas is a videographer, photographer and director. He was born in 1956 in Petrovci near Vukovar. He graduated in film and television recording at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb, where he works as a full professor. For his debut filmmaking achievement, the feature film Diploma for Death directed by Živorad Tomić, he was awarded at the Film Camera Festival in Bitola in 1989. His directorial debut was in 2003, with the notable autobiographical documentary All About Eva. He shoots mostly feature-length documentaries, e.g. Life in Fresh Air, Happy Child, Lora – Testimonies, and Mimara Revisited. His documentary War Reporter won the annual Vladimir Nazor Award for Film Art in 2011.
