PRISON 77
Even though the dictatorial regime in Spain fell in 1977, political prisoners were somehow forgotten. Prison 77 dives into the Spanish penitentiary system precisely in that turbulent period of freedom won. Critics say that this film is a powerful time capsule that director Rodríguez, after the successful Following Marshland and Smoke&Mirrors, destined to be one of the biggest hits of Spanish cinema in 2022. In the first three months of its release in Spain, more than 350,000 people watched it. In the film, young Manuel, an accountant accused of embezzling money equal to today’s 1,200 euros, is sentenced to 20 years in prison. He becomes the leader of a movement that unites all prisons in the fight for freedom and forever changes prison laws and society.
Alberto Rodríguez was born in 1971 in Seville, where he studied image and sound at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the University of Seville. His film career began at an amateur level in 1997 with the short film Banco, which had a budget of only 30,000 pesetas. The film won 15 awards, and its success allowed them to shoot a new version with a budget of four million. Alberto Rodriguez won major cinema awards from both his native country and international festivals for his dark, character-driven crime dramas 7 Virgins (2005), Unit 7 (2012), and The Man with a Thousand Faces (2014). His film Marshland (2014), about the hunt for a serial killer, brought Rodriguez his first Goya for directing.
