THE SKY ABOVE ZENICA

SYNOPSIS

In the Bosnian city of Zenica, cancer and childhood diabetes have become common. The citizens look suspiciously towards a giant steel and coking plant that occupies a quarter of the town and is the largest employer in the area. Through the organization Eko Forum, they push for change and measurements to determine whether their suspicion is warranted. However, like a Greek tragedy, the conflict of interests is more extensive than everyone involved. The citizens need food on their tables, and politicians must deliver jobs and foreign investments to get re-elected. At the same time, the EU’s bank, EBRD, provides loans for a new power plant that runs on coking plant emissions, in parallel with new bicycle lanes to brand Zenica a Green City.
