TOXICILY

SYNOPSIS

‘Better to die of cancer than of hunger’. This is the tragic slogan that hovers to the north of Syracuse, among the chimneys of that petrochemical pole that has devastated one of Sicily’s most beautiful coastlines for seventy years, creating a real health and environmental emergency. Built around the inhabitants who resist and those who, instead, accept a compromise with silence or resignation, Toxicily ventures into the meanders of land sacrificed on the altar of progress, modernity, and globalization.

DIRECTOR’S BIOGRAPHY

François-Xavier Destors’ films explore the invisible side of mass crimes. His first feature-length documentary, Rwanda (2014) tells the story of this popular genocide through the social, political, and cultural role of sport in Rwanda. He authorizes several historical documentaries: Les voix de Srebrenica, Paris une histoire capitale, Les Années 68. Melting Souls (2018) is a cinematic exploration of our ability to adapt to and survive the collective history of our industrial societies. Nelson Mandela: Beyond the Myth (2019) and Thiaroye 44 (2022) are his television movies. With Toxicily (2023), he lifts the veil on ecocide at the gates of Europe. In collaboration with Gaël Kamilindi, he directed the feature-length documentary Didy (2024).
