When Amanda returns to school after the summer break, she’s tasked with something she considers a social disaster: She’s assigned to be the special buddy for the new boy in class, Lars, who has Down syndrome. Amanda dreads standing out and fears Lars might embarrass her, especially in front of her crush, Adam. Unexpectedly, Amanda and Lars form a strong friendship, where Amanda feels she can be herself. However, in school, she keeps their friendship a secret, leading a double life that ultimately leads her to betray both Lars and herself, in her struggles to fit in.
