THE OUTRUN
Based on the best-selling memoir by Amy Liptrot, The Outrun is set in the otherworldly Orkney islands of Scotland. This is a brutally honest drama about addiction and recovery, strength and survival, mental health, and the ability of the sea, the land, and people to restore life and renew hope.
After a decade away in London, 29-year-old Rona returns home to the Orkney Islands. Sober but lonely, she tries to suppress her memory of the events that set her on this journey of recovery. Slowly the mystical land enters her inner world and, one day at a time, Rona finds hope and strength in herself among the heavy gales and the bracingly cold sea.
Nora Fingscheidt was born in 1983 in Germany and spent her youth partly in Argentina. She graduated in fiction directing at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg with the full-length documentary Without This World (2017) about a conservative Mennonite colony in Argentina. It won several Newcomer Awards in Germany, including the Max Ophüls Prize and First Steps Award. Her critically acclaimed fiction début System Crasher (2019) premiered at the Berlinale, winning a Silver Bear. It subsequently won eight German Film Awards, being Germany’s entry for the Oscars in 2020 and winning more than 60 awards at festivals worldwide. Nora then directed The Unforgivable, a film about a woman who exited prison after twenty years. The Outrun is Nora’s third feature film. She continues to work both in documentary and fiction as well as with full-length films and shorts. Nora has two children and lives with her family in Berlin.
